AS AN OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE, my role is to provide operational oversight, drive results-oriented change, and create long-term value to organizations—whether they're startups, established enterprises, or non-profits. I work closely with leadership to realize key objectives by making things happen, keeping things orderly, and preventing the ship from sinking.
I've had the privilege of working across a wide array of industries, including software (educational and cybersecurity), robotics, real estate, wellness, media production (documentaries and animations), advertising, and non-profit.
Being revenue-driven
I typically get directly involved with high-stakes customers and business partners. With years of experience working with Fortune 500 companies, small and medium-sized businesses, and municipal and federal agencies, I've secured enterprise contracts and overseen strategic partnerships. Whether writing proposals, negotiating deals, or making countless cold calls, I've seen how these efforts can lead to remarkable growth—a 9-fold revenue increase in 4 years in one instance.
Finance
To truly manage an organization's operations, I need a clear understanding of its financial health. This involves close collaboration with finance staff, assessing cash flow, reviewing balance sheets, and creating sustainable business plans. I've implemented financial systems, enhanced financial reporting, and adjusted the terms of a stock options plan. One time, I was invited to review and give feedback on a 182-employee staffing plan for a $4-billion petrochemical plant.
Compliance
In my work with Safety CLI Cybersecurity, I created 47 policies and coordinated a security audit that helped the company achieve SOC2 compliance—a critical factor in securing major contracts, including one with TELUS, one of Canada's largest telecommunications providers.
Real Estate
As a partner at Obliqua Properties, I worked on five real estate projects, each teaching me invaluable lessons.
One of my responsibilities was conducting a province-wide search for subdividable land in British Columbia. I developed a custom database application that integrated data from cadastral maps, multiple listing services, municipal zoning regulations, and the Land Titles and Survey Authority. In addition to this system implementation, I made targeted cold calls to property owners to determine their willingness to sell.
Another project involved a feasibility study and due diligence for a 12-acre property approved for 26 affordable housing units. This process included financial modeling, assessing existing water and sewer infrastructure, exploring prefabricated construction options, and navigating complex regulatory frameworks, such as zoning and covenant restrictions.
In a later initiative, I led preliminary discussions with community partners, consultants, and investors for the development of a workshop space for a non-profit that I founded. This resulted in a land offer for a 100-year lease at $1 per year.
Additionally, I conducted research to assess the investment potential of a below-market-priced property zoned for ten affordable units. This followed the seller's unsuccessful development efforts, which presented an opportunity to explore a revised direction to the property's viability.
I also created a detailed database of major development projects in British Columbia, covering decades of information. This database tracked key players, partnerships, estimated costs, trends, government involvement, Indigenous band participation, and construction types. It became a critical resource for understanding broader development patterns throughout the province.
My junior years provided important real estate experience as well, having worked for two years at a realtor's office. This time gave me first-hand exposure to the psychology of buyers and sellers. I also produced an audio documentary on Vancouver's urban development, further establishing my understanding of the forces shaping urban growth.
Non-Profit
As a 2-year side project, I founded and ran a men's wellness non-profit, which facilitated community projects and quickly grew to 165 members, making it the fastest-growing organization of its kind in British Columbia. I raised $75,000 through grants and presentations to philanthropists, and also assisted identical organizations with getting started in other municipalities. In a related capacity, I led 200 meetings, directed three documentaries, and organized and hosted two summits.
Data
As a database architect, I've designed and built hundreds of comprehensive relational systems. These tasks involve mining, sanitizing, and structuring complex data, alongside real-time calculations, database-native, client- and server-side scripting technologies, batch download processes requiring server farms, and interface design.
Examples include a large-scale database for identifying and assessing subdividable real estate lots, and a cybersecurity threat intelligence system for vulnerability discovery and analysis. I also led AI-driven advisory automation, collaborated on R&D for IT risk analysis, systematized data consolidation processes, and visualized the presence of vulnerabilities in half a million Python repositories.
These data puzzles are always a joy to solve, and they can substantially enhance business processes and decision-making. No useful byte can be dropped; hushed attention is perilous here.
Software
I've always had a knack for learning new software applications quickly, which has helped me remain adaptable and resourceful in various projects. In the realm of development, I program in PHP, SQL, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and FileMaker Scripting/Calculations.
Beyond the Job Title
On a personal note, I am a passionate music collector, enjoy long treks through nature, and love working with my hands—whether fixing things or creating something new using a variety of materials and techniques.
I don't shy away from admitting to my own occasional times of uncertainty. It comes with being human. While tough, these are also the moments where clarity is born—preferably in the company of supportive peers equally driven to better themselves personally and professionally. Where does one find the fierce persistence and fearless vision to keep pushing ahead? What drives someone to press forward, to defy obstacles, to overturn inertia? Is it resourcefulness, focus, foresight, or just a willingness to embrace the unknown? For me, it has been a combination of these, but also a constant process of developing abilities and letting go of beliefs that limit my progress.
